In India, 700 BC. AD, an Ayurvedic practitioner named Charaka wrote a medical treatise based on earlier medical texts. In this treatise, Charaka clearly describes a plant called gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) possessing diuretic, aphrodisiac, tonic, rejuvenating and strengthening properties. 

Later, Chinese medicine supplements increased the knowledge about Tribulus terrestris and names it the herb that quenches the wind and stops the tremors. In China, the wind corresponds to cardiovascular diseases: attacks, hypertension, and so on. More recently, in 1847, a scientist named Fritzsche isolated a chemical molecule named Harmine ; from Peganum Harmala. This harmine is one of the active compounds in Tribulus terrestris and is used as a stimulant and aphrodisiac. On the other hand, explorers from South Africa have found that ingesting plants containing harmine acts on the mind and consciousness. Then, studies were carried out to discover the many molecules contained in Tribulus terrestris and to determine the actions of this plant.

A 2014 study shows that Tribulus increases the sexual desire of women with frigidity, without side effects. The same year, a meta-analysis and a clinical study indicated that Tribulus Terrestris would not increase testosterone levels and would not contribute to the resolution of erectile disorders.
